Public servants squeezed again in the name of productivity

The Australian reports Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner "has vowed to maintain tough public service efficiency targets despite warnings the system is unsustainable and is resulting in staff burnout."

The Rudd Government, which continues to be attacked for 'working public servants too hard' recently raised an 'annual efficiency target' from 1.25 per cent to to 2.0 percent clawed back annually from agency operating budgets.

The long standing Hawke government initiative was slammed as "unsustainable" by Public service commissioner, Lynelle Briggs, who warned "the cumulative weight on the dividend has put enormous pressure on staff."
