As part of a global reorganisation, Swedish engineering firm Sandvik will close its Perth production unit where it currently manufactures surface drill rigs used in exploration drilling. The activity will be relocated to units in Brisbane and Santiago, Chile. The Perth closure, involving the loss of 50 local jobs is expected to be completed by 31 January, 2009.
Sandvik is looking for productivity gains as the impetus for a global shakeout of its workforce. One company in the group was over capacity by 1500 workers. Citing weak trends in several market segments Sandvik aims to adapt production capacity and costs to the prevailing demand trend.
